Safety
Passport
Always carry a copy of your passport photo and entry stamp pages while traveling within Cuenca; keeping the original in your home or apartment. When traveling outside of Cuenca you must take your original passport with you. However, while traveling, we also highly recommend that you also take the photocopied pages and keep them stored in a separate location.
Upon your arrival in Ecuador, El Nomad will scan your passport and keep an electronic file in the Cuenca office. This is a security measure and will help to replace your identification in case your passport is stolen or lost.
Street Smarts
Always avoid crossing parks and using dark allies at night, especially if you are by yourself. We highly recommended to use a taxi when traveling at night. Just make sure that the taxi has a taximeter (if it doesn't do not forget to negotiate the price before you get in) and that it is yellow in color.
Drugs
Buying, using, and selling drugs is illegal in Ecuador and will result in termination without refund of your El Nomad program. If you are arrested or jailed for any reason, including charges related to drug usage or trafficking, there is nothing that El Nomad, your home university, or the embassy of your home country can do for you.
Drinking and Going Out
When drinking, never accept a drink that has not been opened or poured in front of you. If you are ever out in Cuenca and feel you will be unable to return home safely, please call the El Nomad office and ask for assistance. Money & Valuables
DO NOT TRAVEL WITH MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE (or more than you will need) When traveling with cash it is best to break the money up and store it in different locations (e.g.: different pockets in your backpack, your jacket, your pants, your wallet). Never have all of your money in one place. Always make sure that your valuable items, and all of your belongings for that matter, are in your sight. This is true especially in public places such as bus terminals, public markets, plazas, etc.
