The Adventure is Born... (written on March 11, 2010)
On January 29th we found out that we are pregnant and our plans, once again, changed. We have decided that it is time to move back to Ecuador and since we have talked about seeing Central America and Mexico for years, we decided to drive. We will have about 6 weeks to make is between 8,000 and 10,000 miles (depending on how much we get lost and how many side trips we take). That's about 240 miles per day. Not all of the roads will be sealed. Many will be dirt with potholes and less than ideal driving conditions, but we are installing a brand new Old Man Emu suspension on our car, bought a 5,000 pound winch, a machete, and will be ready to go!
To Latitude 0°0’0” is a 4-wheeled adventure that will have us visiting up to 11 countries, 2 oceans, and 2 seas. On May 1, 2010 we will set off from Kirkland, Washington heading off for Latitude 0°0’0” outside of Quito, Ecuador. The purpose of this adventure… to reach our goal so we can plan our next adventure abroad (Africa! Or at least that’s my vote!), oh, and to have our baby in Ecuador and run our business.

From Kirkland we will journey down the west coast of the United States, following scenic Highway 1 to Mexico. After crossing the US/Mexican border we drive down the Baja peninsula, cross to Mazatlan, then head straight for the Gulf of Mexico and follow the coast for the remainder of our experiencia Mexicana. Next will come Guatemala its expansive ancient Mayan ruins, volcanoes, and mountainous landscapes. Followed, and contrasted, by Belize, known for its crystal clear waters and pristine jungles (a great place to test the car’s abilities!). We will continue on to Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, challenging our driving abilities on their unfinished roads and in their muddy tropical countrysides. In Panama the Jeep will be put in to a container and shipped across the Caribbean Sea to Barranquilla or Cartagena, Colombia. We will follow suit in a sailboat, taking several days to enjoy life at sea. Upon reaching Barranquilla or Cartagena we will head south to through Medallin and Cali to the Colombian/Ecuadorian border. From there we will make our way out of the jungle, in to Quito, and, finally, to Latitude 0º0’0”.
Here's a map of our journey (this will be updated as we move and our schedule is adjusted)
