Ecuador
In a few short hours you venture from the exotic plants and animals of the jungle to immense, snow-covered peaks of the active volcanoes in the Andes highlands. A few hours more and you wind up in the coastal region where freshly caught seafood can found at every turn, and lively salsa music seems to come from all angles. A thousand kilometers off shore lay Darwin’s Enchanted Islands, the Galapagos, with their sandy beaches and endemic wildlife. Cities with majestic churches, historic colonial-style towns, colorful markets, and friendly residents, make Ecuador the ideal place for an international experience.
Cuenca
Cuenca, whose name stands for river basin, is tucked into a majestic valley in the heart of the Andes Mountains. With a population of 350,000, Cuenca is Ecuador’s third largest city, but provides the feeling of a much more intimate town. In 1999 Cuenca was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site and was recently voted one of the top ten cities in the world to visit in 2010 by the Lonely Planet. Lively street markets, colonial churches, indigenous peoples in traditional dress, and a warm friendly atmosphere make Cuenca a perfect home away from home.
